April 2021 Recap: We Play Ourselves

We Play Ourselves by Jen Silverman

LLBC Rating: 8/10

Book Synopsis: The debut novel of playwright Jen Silverman, We Play Ourselves incorporates themes of failure, creativity, sexuality, and art as it follows a playwright fleeing to California after being the subject of a New York scandal. Here she meets an amateur film maker who she thinks will help her escape her past.

A great book for conversation. Keeping in mind that this is a debut novel, we felt that many plot points were left with minimal resolution. A good lesson overall to look to the future and forget your past, we still wish that as readers the novel would have had a more complete ending.

OUTING:

As April's theme is art, we spent a rainy day in the living room painting little canvases with famous Michigan and Grand Rapids locations and art pieces and things that remind us of our home state. These paintings were later hung in a local accounting office. While we painted, we talked about what art means to us and our favorite art outlets. We talked about painting (of course), music, film, sculpture, dance, etc. and discussed our favorites!

FINAL MEETING:

At the final meeting this month we talked about the second half of the book. We discussed the book's message of the importance of failure and how that relates to our lives. We learned that our failures have all taught us something. Whether that be in our relationships, education, or some other large point in our lives, failures, big and small, are important.
