December 2020 Recap: The Girl Who Chased the Moon

The Girl Who Chased the Moon by Sarah Addison Allen

LLBC Rating: 6/10

Book Synopsis: The Girl Who Chased the Moon is the overlapping fictional story of an orphaned teenage girl spending the summer with her grandfather in her mother’s old room, and a young woman who returned to the town she grew up in to deal with her father’s diner after his passing. With elements of magic and teen romance, this young adult story kept us curious and melted our hearts. Though this book was a fun read, we feel that this story was for a slightly younger audience.

When Emily first arrives to Mullaby, she sees a local phenomenon called the Mullaby lights. These lights, floating outside the window of her mother’s old room, peak Emily’s curiosity. When she meets a mysterious boy who is forbidden to go near her, she realizes that the mysteries of Mullaby go deeper than she could have ever imagined.

Meanwhile, Julia cannot wait to get out of town after fixing up her late father’s diner and preparing to sell it. When an old flame from high school shows up one day, things get a little complicated. Follow Emily and Julia as they work through love, loss, and mystery.

OUTING:

For this month’s outing, we decided to stay in. We had our first ever LLBC Christmas party with cocktails, music, and a white elephant gift exchange!

In the spirit of Christmas we donated a big pile of toys to Toy for Tots. We spent the day together going to different stores throughout town and collecting toys for all ages, wrapping them while listening to some classic Christmas music, and dropped them off before starting our own little party. We all showed up to the party with ingredients to build our very own signature cocktail for everyone to try. Our cocktails were created based on a color that was chosen during the first meeting. We had red, yellow, blue, black, and pink, and everyone was able to try one of each!

FINAL MEETING:

Our final meeting was spent discussing the themes of The Girl Who Chased the Moon and presenting our writings to the group. This month’s writing assignment was to create a piece based on some of your favorite holiday memories and traditions, and what they mean to you. Each member also had the option of writing their very own holiday centered fiction story inspired by their own experience or something else.

This month was a great one to end the year with and we are so excited to see where the book club goes in 2021! Remember to follow us on Instagram and TikTok to keep up with the LLBC everyday.
