May Recap 2021: The Roommate

The Roommate by Rosie Dannan

LLBC Rating: 8/10

Book Synopsis: The Roommate is a fan fiction-esque story about two unlikely roommates becoming friends….and maybe something more. With a special focus on female sexuality, Rosie Dannan immerses us in a dramatic love story some of us dream about.

Mature audiences and fans of Wattpad, this is the story for you. Unlikely roommates, Josh and Clara, cross paths due to one ended relationship and the hopeful beginnings of a new one. In such a small space, it is only a matter of time before romance blossoms, right?

Though the book was a fun read, a few plot points were left underdeveloped. They were mentioned in the beginning, but given little importance throughout the story until being brought back at the very end when we were meant to remember them from 200 pages earlier. Nevertheless, Rosie Dannan still got her message across, and it is one of great importance. A message of feminism and female empowerment. In a space where women’s pleasure is considered a mystery, someone finally says that it just might be possible that her partner finds it too tedious to learn. Put simply, women deserve better sex, and Josh and Clara take matters into their own hands.

OUTING:

This month, the outing and writing prompt went hand in hand and for this reason, we stayed in. The prompt of the month was dialogue. In essence, write a script! This one was difficult for us as most of us had never written exclusively in dialogue. Most of the time we rely on what is not said to get the point across on our writings. However, the challenge was good for us and pushed us beyond what we had ever thought we could do. We practiced this through a writing workshop where we all came together to work on a secret project that we hope to release in 2022.

FINAL MEETING:

Our final meeting in May was spent discussing the edits we made to our dialogue writings since the outing. We each presented some edits and worked to together to finalize some changes. We were all so happy with what we ended with. After discussing the dialogue, we talked about the book. Our club really enjoyed the focus on female sexuality and romance, and the importance of pleasure for women as well as men. However, we do wish that some of the plot points were more integrated into the plot, given there importance that we find at the end of the story. Overall, May was a great month in the LLBC.
