October 2020 Recap: The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires

The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

LLBC Rating: 10/10

Book Synopsis: This modern vampire tale was the perfect mix of suspense, confusion, and horror, with a dash of female independence that kept us all wanting more even after the last page. We all loved this story and most keep it at the top of the recommendations list.

Patricia, mother of 2, struggles to find her place in her new home of Charleston as a stay at home wife. After being invited to join a book club, Patricia beings a friendship with other mothers in town, bonding over their interest in true crime. One night, an unfortunate incident puts Patricia in contact with James Harris. James is charming and attractive and shows interest in Patricia and her family, however, there is something strange about him. When children start going missing in a different area of town, Patricia becomes suspicious. Follow the book club as they investigate the case and learn how to slay the vampires of Charleston.

OUTING:

This month, we celebrated the month’s theme of Vampires with a viewing of the 1922 version of Nosferatu, based on Bram Stoker’s original tale Dracula. Thought to be the story that paved the way for every Vampire related tale told after it, Nosferatu follows Hutter, a real estate agent looking to sell Count Orlok on a new home. What will happen when Hutter invites this strange client into his own town? Will he be able to protect them, or will the Count win? Grab some snacks, turn out the lights and prepare for fright with this vampire flick.

Our club also took a trip to the local apple orchard to fully immerse ourselves in the festivities of fall.

The writing assignment was simple, brainstorm your very own spooky story just in time for Halloween. We had everything from haunted house to runaway gone wrong, even a story about the spirit of a serial killer. It is amazing what we can do when the spooky spirit of Halloween is in the air.

THE FINAL MEETING:

During the final meeting we discussed the ending of the book and raved about the strong female character presence. We each read our stories and sat for constructive feedback from the group. The encouragement everyone gave and received was truly inspiring and I walked away with newfound ideas for where to take my story and stretch my abilities in future writing. We are so excited for next month. Keep up with us on our social media to know whats happening day to day!
